The Caravaner’s code

Caravaner’s are a friendly lot.  You just have to wander around a caravan park where everyone you pass will greet you with a “hello” or “Good Morning”. Life on the road is a great way to live and you will meet a lot of temporary mates, or short term best friends and neighbours.

In all my travels I don’t think I have ever met a nasty caravaner. Everyone is always happy for a chat or to share their travels with you. Doesn’t matter if you are just walking through the park or using the shared BBQ’s. Most conversations begin with “where are you from?”. Amazing on this trip just how many fellow Victorians we have met! The conversation then leads into “Where are you headed?” at which stage if they realise you are going where they have been you get an instant itinerary of where you should and shouldn’t go next!

Most people are so nice they would give you their right arm if they could! Mark met one nice fellow in Yeppoon who was on his final leg home to Mackay. While giving his instant itinerary and the “must do” free camps, he asked if Mark had the Camps Australia book. When Mark indicated he had left his copy at home, the guy instantly said “Well you can have mine, it is only Camps 5, but we are going to buy Camps 7 when we get home and this one is full of notes!” His pride and joy and he handed it over without blinking an eye!!!

That’s all part of the Caravaner’s code. Be happy, have fun and share your experiences with fellow Caravaner’s.

It doesn’t stop when you hit the road either. Every Caravaner you pass is given a wave and a smile, acknowledgment of the secret Caravaner’s Code that you can’t really understand until you experience it. A lot can be told by the wave you receive as you pass by at high speed and I’ll try to explain the different options below….

First of all we will start with the No wave. These people are funny as they look straight ahead, two hands on the wheel and no acknowledgment to the passing caravan. These are the people who don’t know the code, often found in the more metropolitan areas and while they have a van in tow, they are not your travelling caravanner. No wavers are often young guys, or women… not being sexist, but very few women will give a wave while driving!

So then we start with the “One finger” wavers. No it is not a rude middle finger… Caravaner’s are a friendly bunch remember!! These are the beginners, those who have just started to discover the Caravan code, but are still confused as to whet it all means. For these people, they know something is going on and think they want to be part of it, so they lift one finger off the wheel to acknowledge another caravan.

From a one finger waver, most progress to become a “hooked thumb” waver. Thumb stays securely wrapped around the steering wheel leaving all other fingers to lift and greet a fellow caravaner. This is still a favourite of mine, and some will add a little twist of the wrist or sideways flick of the fingers as they become a little more seasoned.

Now we get to the true seasoned Caravaner’s. These are the ones who have been on the road a long time. They have long since discovered the code and have made it part of their life having spent not just weeks, but months and years on the road. You can always pick them because they will give a “full hand lift” wave. Now this is where true personality comes into the wave. For some it is simply a “stationary hovering” of the hand in the air, but others will wave it either “up and down” or “side to side”. I’ve even seen a “twister”… hovering hand but adding a spinning forearm to the mix.

Sometimes you will get an “other hander”, main hand remains on the steering wheel and the other hand, often the left, is raised in vigorous greeting. One that makes me smile is the “Couples” waver. Generally older and having spent a long time living the code together, the drivers partner (guess in this day and age I can’t assume it is their wife) will also raise her hand in greeting and you get double the hello from one encounter!!

The most dangerous I have seen though is the “full arm” waver. Man these guys are going to do damage. You can often pick these before the arm moves as it is the facial expression you see first. Genuine excitement at meeting a fellow Caravaner. The big smile, the wide open eyes, the raised eyebrows… then the arm comes up flopping around and around. These guys have drunk from the Caravaner’s code holy grail. They are giddy with the excitement, this is their life… this is living… this is the only religion… the meaning of life… the true existence…. then…. whoosh…. in a blink of an eye they are gone… new destinations await, more temporary best friends to meet and experiences to share… this is living to the Caravaner’s code.

Anyway, slow news day today. Left Yeppoon yesterday and drove to Airlie Beach. Man is it hot here!!

Enjoy 😉

Bye Yeppoon, time to head North again

Was a slow start to yesterday, most of us slept in except me who wakes at 6:30am every morning to write the blog before we get moving for the day. Didn’t have to stress yesterday because there was not a lot of moving!!

In preparation for our departure today, Mark changed his tyres, pulling the ruined one off so we could take it into town and swap it. Inspired by this, I decided to finally climb under the car and fix that rattling bash plate. Was good hard hot work in the sun, but finally when I start the car people won’t look at me like I’m driving a ticking time bomb!!

To give it a good test, Mark and I took it for a run into town, swapped the tyre and got some supplies for lunch. Then the adults all voted for not doing much else for the rest of the day. We screened and bathered up and headed for the pool.

A quick stop at reception and they agreed to turn the 5m high waterside on. This thing was awesome as it twisted and turned from on high. All the kids had a ball, Clare getting braver and going solo in the end and even Fi gave it a go. Everyone’s reaction was the same as they splashed into the water at the end… “I’m doing it again!”

All tuckered out from climbing the stairs and sliding down, we retired to the pool where we met a number of nice people, most who had only just arrived today and were drawn to the pool by the waterside. There were lots of discussions… where are you from… where have you been… what’s good ahead?

The one constant that almost everyone has said to us has been “…you have to go to the Big 4 in Airlie beach!”

So that is where we are headed today. We have loved our time here in Yappoon, I think Mark has already requested a transfer up here… they are house hunting after all! Unfortunately can’t see Coles IT moving up here anytime soon, so I guess for the moment I will have to return to Melbourne….eventually!

Gracie II

Well Mark and Fiona have done a great job of documenting yesterday’s activities, and both got some great photos as we spent the day cruising over to Great Keppel Island.

It was a fantastic day, and everyone was thoroughly exhausted by the end. Gracie II is a great boat, A twin hull catamaran, with two big nets at the front to sit on and a big cabin, ensuring we were more than comfortable. As we left the harbour, there was a small swell of half a metre, but otherwise it was smooth sailing. We motored over to keppel as the wind was not quite strong enough for sailing. The kids were all great with only Jess and Emma feeling a little sick. I suspect though that Jess was putting it on as she wanted one of the sea sick lollipops that Kate got for her kids… hehe, no luck here Jess, but we gave her a Kwell (motions sickness tablet) anyway and the sickness almost instantly disappeared! Sorry Jess, kwells don’t work that fast, you are supposed to take them 30 mins before getting on the boat!

Poor little Emma on the other hand maybe wasn’t putting it on, sending a load of burly over the front of the boat as we pulled into the bay. At least she got it over the side and not in the boat! She seemed a little more comfortable afterwards.

We arrived at Monkey beach on Keppel island and anchored about 150-200m from the shore. The reef was about 50m further out, or we had the option of being ferried by dinghy to play on the beach. As usual, I was gear on and straight into that water! Was an effort to get the kids sorted, masks and fins (not flippers) then we finally got them into the water with a noodle under their arms. Didn’t last long, Mark thinks it was the cold water, but from where I was the girls were struggling with haveing no teeth to keep their snorkels in!!! the first mouthfull of water and they were out and back on the boat. Before Aunty Kate was even in the water, they were out!!

Anthony (the skipper) said he would drop them on the beach. Poor Kate was going to miss out on the snorkelling, so I simply took the decision out of her hands, racing the boat as I snorkelled to shore. I won, but man were my legs sore afterwards!!! So it was Mattie, Emma, Clare, Tara and Jess on the shore, while Zac, Fiona, Mark and Kate all went off to explore the reef. Now the problem with swimming in was my hat and sunglasses were back on the boat 🙁 squinting as the sun reflected off this beautiful white sand, I asked Anthony if on his next trip over he could grab it for me.

Didn’t have to wait too long as about 15 minutes later, Anthony motored back to shore with Mark and Kate and to my relief, my hat and sunglasses 🙂 We were joined about 10 mins later by Fiona and Zac. Apparently the reef wasn’t too much to see. We have all been spoiled by some amazing reefs, so we set pretty high expectations. Instead we filled the time before lunch playing in the sand and collecting shells. Jess and I took a walk up the beach and over the bluff to have a look at Long beach on the other side, but it was very blowy, so we only had a look from the bluff and headed back down. We had the beach more or less to ourselves, with the exception of what looked to be a group of school kids. As Jess and I passed them on the path to the bluff, I realised they were a group of school girls, all about 15 or 16 in bikinis with only two male teachers!!! What the? Seemed a little strange to me… Anyway, they were up one end of the beach and we were at the other, so we had the place to ourselves. Sorry Judith, no Morton sand castles here, although I did consider it.

Instead, I put my snorkelling stuff back on and headed for the boat, as I got close, I swam under the boat, resurfaced on the otherside and made for the reef. Now I didn’t think it was that boring. Sure I have seen better, but if you duck dived down and got a bit closer you found some big fish hiding under the coral. Not a lot of colour, but still worth a look. I even saw Dory from finding Nemo… No Nemo though 🙁 I spent about 10 mins on the reef before I saw the dinghy heading back to the shore and so made my way back to the boat for lunch.

Anthony and Vicki (Anthony’s wife and crew aboard Gracie II) had cooked up snags on the BBQ, with prawns, ham and cheese and salads. Jess was straight into the prawns of course, but unfortunately they were raw and turns out she only likes them cooked. No problem as Fi was more than happy to have hers. After lunch, one of the other kids on the boat wanted to jump off for a quick swim before we left, so he leapt off into the water. Being a bit hot and egged on by my loving boy, I though I would do the same. So I put my sunglasses in my hat, pulled my tanktop off, climbed over the rail and dived from the front of the boat to cheers from Zac.

Water was beautiful and a dip was just what I needed to cool off. Anthony announced it was time to pull anchor, so I made my way back to the family at the front of the boat. Clare, ever being the ratbag she is and always stealing my hat saw the perfect opportunity. She snatched my hat up as I went to grab it, throwing it on her head and proudly announcing “I have Uncle Craig’s hat!” “Nooooooo Clare” I screamed as my sun glasses dropped straight through the crack in the boom nets and plonked into 3m deep water!!!!

“Oh No!!”

I quickly grabbed my mask snorkel and fins (which I had just packed away) and leapt off the back of the boat. Luckily it was a sandy bottom and in one move I was able to dive under, fin to the bottom and return to the surface triumphant with sunglasses in hand. Back on the boat though, the damage was done. Uncle Craig had growled at Clare who was now buried in Kate’s arms crying. I picked Clare up in a huge bear hug, and eventually managed to coax her back to being friends. Oh well, all was good in the end.

With the wind blowing from the north now, the second snorkelling spot was no good, so Anthony took us around the island to the old resort. Most of it is closed and fenced off and inaccessible. Anthony again did loads to the shore in the dinghy, but that seemed too easy for me and I dived again from the front and raced the dinghy to shore. Was a little harder this time without fins, and about 10m from the beach I still couldn’t stand straight in the water! Must be a good drop off here! I beat the dinghy again, but then again I got a good head start. That being said, I decided I would take the dinghy ride on the way back as I am not as young as I used to be… yes you can read that as very unfit!!

We wandered around a little before finding the massive Shark’s mouth (photos Mark has already posted), then just had a play on the beach. Wasn’t long before Anthony was back, and he asked us to pose for a Facebook photo. Will try to find the link… Here you go:

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sail-Capricornia/190027444383673

Great comment Anthony, although not sure who the delightful kids were???

Anyway, back on the boat again, we had time for a few more jumps off the front, Zac and Mattie joined me this time (good on ya boys) before we set off under full sail this time to head back to the Mariner. What a way to end a great day, was so relaxing and peaceful with the motors off gliding through the waves. Most people couldn’t help but fall asleep on the boom nets in the setting sun. Had a great day on the water, and both Anthony and Vicki were fantastic hosts. If you ever get up this way, I can certainly recommend getting out on Gracie II with Sail Capricornia.

Back on shore we made headed back to the van for showers and some “Cheese O’Clock” time before everyone headed to bed early totally exhausted.

Who knows what we will do today, our last in Yeppoon before heading further North, but either way it is going to be a hot one. For the first time the mercury will go over 30 degrees, a welcome change for us travelling Melburnians.

Boating and snorkelling adventures

Well today we headed out on a catamaran charter to Great Keppell Island. It saw an early start with the boat leaving at 8.30 ( poor Fiona had to be up early!!!)

It was a beautiful days after some serious sideways rain last night/this morning.

Kate was all prepared with Kwells but we were unsure if any of the kids got her motion sickness. Good news, only 1 of 3 got it – poor Emma was green in the gills and as we arrived at the beach was vomiting over the front.

Once the boat stopped and she was empty she cheered up. All the girls jumped in for a snorkel on the reef on their noodles. However the water wad fresh and when they heard the dinghy was heading to the beach, they were all out and off to shore.

This proved good fun with digging holes, collecting shells and finding coral. Only problem is that all the coral had to go back as it is protected, oh well.

Snorkelling was average with minimal to see really. Some grey nomad neighbours have
recommended Harvey Reef out of Airlie Beach as being awesome. Hope go make it there.

Then we stopped at the old resort on Great Keppell which is still closed but apparently works are expected soon to redevelop it. Apparently Peter Garrett as environment minister poo pooed it without reading it. We found Jaws washed up on the beach

For the trip back Emma was Kwelled up but while worked a bit i think she was tired and over it. As the wind had picked up, we got to sail back most of the way. It was very peaceful with the motors off and Fiona and Tara may have fallen asleep

The food was great on board and Anthony & Vicki as hosts were friendly and helpful.

Back in the park now Emma is asleep, and it is almost time for the others to go to sleep! First beers (and tea for the girls) down.

Here some other pictures….

This place look alright…

So it is decided… we will stay in Yeppoon until Thursday. I would call it sunny Yeppoon, as the days have been fantastic, but I awoke again this morning and it has bucketed down overnight. Water everywhere! Luckily some smart person has moved our clothes line in under the annex (wasn’t me I was fast asleep) because we are going to need our bathers today for our cruise and snorkelling around Keppel Islands!

That’s right, we have a day on the water. Booked yesterday on a Catamaran for a full day cruising around the islands. We chose this boat as they provide everything including lunch, and from what the lady at the Big 4 reception said, there is no use going to Keppel island itself since the resort closed down years ago (something I wasn’t aware of!).

So once our cruise was booked, we put a load of washing (or two or three) through and headed into town for supplies. I needed clippers if I was going snorkelling as the beard was looking a bit shabby, Mark needed a universal remote for the caravan TV (apparently the old one didn’t like being dropped in water!), and we needed a few other bits and pieces. Ended up having lunch in the food court (Kebabs Yum!) then we went in search of the RipCurl surf shop so we could get a rashy for Mark and Fiona (got to be sunsmart!) The shop must have loved us, as Mark got one, I got one, Fi got one and Kate got one!! Kate, Fi and I also all bought new comfortable thongs… for our feet that is!!

Shopping done, we headed back to camp for a swim. The water was chilly, but everyone got in for a dip. Wasn’t too bad once you were in. I asked at reception if they could turn the waterslide on, but unfortunately the guy that supervises it had just gone on the bin run, and it was too late by the time he got back.

Anyway, only a short blog today as I must start getting everyone up and ready so we can be at the mariner by 8am. Will be 5pm by the time we get back, so should be a great day snorkelling!! Pity both Mark and I forgot out underwater housings!!!!

Curlew birds

We just had one of the friendly grey nomads come and show the kids a nesting bush curlew bird. She is sitting on her eggs and the kids were told to stay away as the she will bite to protect her eggs.

Here is her mate lurking rock still next to the next van

Then Kate was doing Clare’s hair – boy does she look happy!

Yeppoon (where? I had to Google it!)

Yesterday was our departure from the oldies park. On the way our of Hervey Bay we found Dan’s for a stock up!! Jim Beam Zero is harder to find in remote bottleo’s – you get funny looks!

Geez QLD love roadworks. The park owner warned us that the usual 4 hours to Rocky would take 6 or so and he wasn’t wrong. The RACQ have billboards saying demand better roads, and boy they are not wrong. Talking to my neighbours here when we arrived (queenslanders from Mackay who are almost home after a round trip the same as ours) and the govt says remote roads are too hard but reckon the NT roads are mostly excellent.

An uneventful day until almost in Yeppon when Kate and myself heard a strange noise during an overtake. The car and van felt ok and the noise did not repeat so on we went.

Then when i was putting the sullage hose on in the park i noticed this…

20130909-094918.jpg

20130909-094926.jpg

It would appear the noise was the tread separating from one of the tyres. The odd thing is i did not know the original tyres were retreads! Lucky i have 2 brand newies on the back from Tweed Heads. Today i think after the kids play and maybe a tour or cruise, i will swap the last 2 old ones for new tyres and get another 2 new ones.

This is what a tyre should look like…

The funny thing is i thought about this in Hastings Point but Craig and myself decided i have already lost one so losing more wont happen…..hmmmm hope this is the last one.

Well time from Breakfast and Fi is looking at glass bottom boat tours

Yeppoon

Woke this morning in Yeppoon, about 50km north west of Rockhampton and the gateway to Great Keppel Island. We are right on the the tropic of Capricorn (yay tropics at last), and I woke to a tropical shower, our first rain since Melbourne except now I can already feel the humidity rising. Love the tropics.

We left Harvey Bay around 9:30am yesterday, as we were packing the owner of the Big 4 kept popping around and trying to get us to book another night so we could spend the day whale watching. I made it pretty clear that wasn’t going to happen (we were already half packed), but it didn’t stop him from trying. Zac started to think it was like Lotus Casino from Percy Jackson… once you are in they never let you leave… his reasoning was that is why there are no kids in this park… only old people!!! Lucky we escaped!

Actually the owner was pretty good about it, and offered some advice about heading north. In fact it was on his advice that we made a beeline for Yeppoon, so we pushed out of the caravan park, stopped at Coles Express for fuel, Coles for food and Dan Murpheys (no Coles variety of liquor here) for alcohol. All stocked up, we pointed north.

Probably got a good 30 mins up the road this time before we got the call on the CB “Craig… can we pull into the next rest stop… Mattie needs to go” followed a few minutes later by “…actually so does Kate!”. As it turned out, she was not alone with most of us needing to go, so a quick side of the road visit to the caravan and we were off again… going to be a long trip if we can only make 30 mins in the car!!

Stopped for lunch at a roadside travelling area. This is like a huge camp ground with lots of caravans and campers stopping in the shade for lunch. You could sleep here I guess, but a sign indicated that you could be fined if you stayed longer than 20 hours. This is a short term stay, not a camping ground!

As we were pulling out, I saw a great little van that had been converted into a mobile coffee shop. What a great idea, so I stopped to chat to the guy… oh and get a large coffee! Who would have thought I could get a real coffee out here! No Bella Barrista, but was delicious anyway.

Lunch, coffee and wee stops done, it was time to get some kilometres behind us. The kids were great in the car and at one stage I said to Fi “you wouldn’t even know they are there!” The wonders of modern technology with mobile internet and an iPod or iPad you can entertain kids for hours. Mind you there is a danger. Zac got a few iTunes cards for his birthday, so I loaded them into his account. $50 worth of purchases… awesome…err except that I discovered that so far he has spent about $200 of his $50! He thought it would run out and tell him, but of course it just started running up Dad’s credit card!

He was very ashamed when I showed him last night, and I have removed my credit card from his account for the moment. Oh well, my fault for not monitoring closer, guess it could have been worse!

Anyway, after a much more comfortable day driving with no (or less that is) mad Queensland drivers to contend with, we arrived in Yeppoon about 4:45pm and went straight to the Information centre to see what Yeppoon has to offer. Lucky we did, as we were informed that the caravan parks were all full except the Big 4 and we had better book quickly.

She was most distressed that we didn’t have a booking and it was so late in the day. We rang the Top Tourist park on the beach where we thought we would stay, but sure enough it was full. No issue at the Big4 though, a large and reasonably new park among new real estate (maybe Mark and Kate could live here) we found sites next to each other with no issue. Nothings a problem!

The park is actually awesome, with a massive waterside! I’m sure the kids will find an excuse to visit that today!

Was as we were setting up that Mark realised that he had lost another tyre! Second one for the trip, or third if you include the spare with the bubble. This one was a ripper with the tread coming right off the wheel. See the picture below. Lucky the van is dual axel, or that would have been a nasty change on the side of the road.

20130909-082256.jpg

Guess that will mean a trip to Kmart tyre and auto once we are back on the road for a few more new tyres. Obviously had re-treads on it when he bought the van.

Anyway, today we will explore Yeppoon, make sure we have enough snorkelling gear, maybe finally get to a beach and try to book a boat to Great Keppel Island tomorrow. Some of us are making the most of nowhere to go today with a bit of a sleep in (half their luck). Me? well blogs done, rain has stopped and two little girls have just woken up… must be time for breakfast!

Travelling north

Yesterday saw our departure from NSW for the last time so start the meandering journey north. While had set an aspirational goal of Rockhampton, we were just going to take it as it comes.

What i can say is broadly QLD drivers are sh1t and quite rude – deliberately failing to keep left, varying speeds and pulling out in front of cars with caravans (i was starting to think the Morton’s car had some sort of dumb ass magnet!

Once we cleared the Sunshine Coast this cleared up so maybe a localised issue?

The girls were stuffed after days of fun!

We stopped

20130908-075249.jpg

We also passed a well known landmark

20130908-075412.jpg

20130908-075423.jpg

We stopped in Gympie for lunch (no Coolola Way)! Found a great park to have our rolls with an awesome playground. It also has a ride best described as a pedal powered monorail for kids. Clare started with a cousin pedaling but ended with some random older girl doing the work for her!

20130908-075855.jpg

20130908-075905.jpg

After leaving Gympie i realised i was now the furthest north i have ever been (plane trips not counted). A mile stone for the kids and I! Kate has been north before.

We stopped for a “family meeting” just south of Maryborough to determine where we would stop. Hervey Bay was decided and based on proximity to the beach, the Point Vernon Big4 was chosen.

Turns out the beach is rocks and the park caters for grey nomads! Nice park with friendly owners. Kids went for a swim and play until they were frozen.

As a good provider dinner was cooked!!

20130908-080417.jpg

The election coverage was riveting though at least the country and economy might have a fighting chance now that unions and power mad bozo’s are not in control. Pity about the football though. The boys clearly did not have the hunger.

Then imagine waking up to these trouble makers…..
