Stress? What stress?

Well we are on holidays, it is only day 2 and already I can feel that stress of day to day life slipping away ?

Was a big day driving yesterday, 14 hours on the road and I think we were just about done by the time we pulled into a little “in the middle of nowhere” caravan park in Tooraweenah.

Now we have seen a few caravan parks in our time ranging from 5 star to just a power pole in a barren carpark, and I must admit when we saw this place on the internet rated at only 2 ½ stars we were a little worried. Was no need to be though as this place is simple but clean and the staff would have to be the friendliest we have ever met!

We pulled into the park around 5pm, and after a little confusion as our muddled “been driving all day” brains couldn’t work out the instructions given to us by the park staff, we got into our sites with the doors facing each other. As Mark and I set to work opening and rigging the vans, the park staff came over with a plate of scones, jam and cream for everyone (had to go back for more as they underestimated the number of children we had!) and checked us in at the sites. That kind of hospitality you just don’t see very often, and it was very welcome after a long days drive. If anyone ever finds themselves up this way, spend a night at the Tooraweenah caravan park! You can’t beat it, at $42 a night for 2 Adults and 3 children… a bargain!

While we set the vans up, the kids went off to explore the park. There is no playground or jumping pillow here, but that didn’t stop our kids having a ball, especially once they found a horse! The girls were all very excited, and spent most of their time playing with and feeding “Pete”. Tara took some photos on her iPod which will try to get up here at some stage.

Only downfall of this place is that it is a bit of a Telstra blackspot, so internet is hard to find… will have to upload this post from the road today!

Was an early night for most of us last night, as everyone had been up since 2 or 3am that morning, so we cooked a BBQ for tea then sent the kids off to bed, but not before the kids were amazed at the number of stars in the night sky here. I must admit I was a little amazed myself. Once you got away from the light, the Milky Way was clearly visible in all its glory, with billions of stars we had never seen before ?

So, as the title suggests, I can already feel that stress disappearing as we settle back into a travelling holiday. Was great to be on the road again yesterday, although there are still a couple of minor issues to sort out. First, I lost my CB ariel! Don’t ask me how, one minute it was there and the next….gone! Snapped off in the wind and vibrations I think, but no one saw it go. Second issue is the relay I put in to charge the second battery is simply not working. The relay ensures the main battery is charged before flicking over and charging the second battery, but for some reason it simply won’t flick over ? I must have got a dud. Got to fix that, or the freezer full of meat in the back seat won’t last long.

Nothing is a problem, but it means we will have to find a Super Cheap Auto or similar along the way so I can replace them both. Fitting them on the road will be fun…..not!

Anyway, it is about 7:30am and I have been up since about 6am. This is the part of caravanning in the country I had forgotten about, you see about 5:30am this morning the local rooster started…”cock-a-doodle-doo…. cock-a-doodle-doo…”

It is still going, and there is simply no way I can sleep through that!!! Seriously thinking about having chicken for lunch if I just find the stupid thing!!!

LOL just joking, I was in bed by 9pm last night, so I have had more than enough sleep, and the early rise meant I could get the blog done. I actually didn’t mind being woken to the sounds of birds singing, a relaxing and peaceful way to wake… although we will see if my wife thinks the same when she surfaces!!

Today, it is time for the Morton’s and the Waldron’s to part way. You see one day on the road was enough and…. err I mean this is where we head off to visit our families for a few days :p

We will be heading onto Glenn Innes so the kids and I can meet Fi’s family we have never met, and the Waldron’s will continue onto to Brisbane to stay with Mark’s Dad. We will meet again on Tuesday on the Gold Coast for some theme park fun before pointing north and seeing where we end up!

I will continue to update you each day, and hopefully Mark will let us know what they are up to in Brisbane.

Until then, I better wake the family, get breakfast and pack up so we can have another fun filled day on the road…

Late addition – found some internet!! Waking the family might be a bit harder than I thought 🙁

Day 1

Good morning everyone, hope this lovely day finds you well. As you can tell, I AM NOT GRUMPY …anymore.
I may have voiced my distain at being further sleep depleted to start my holiday when the lead up has been busy and stressful enough. Between work, social gatherings, packing, cleaning and shopping it’s been a busy week. At this point let me say, I know I have added shopping to my list of pre duties and as you know Craig did too. Let me just say if you want a meal, soap for the shower, dish washing liquid, milk or the like, I have you covered. Craig’s shopping has your thirst needs covered…. Very important indeed!

I’m not sure how much sleep I got last night. My mind kept ticking over with things to remember. Was hard to roll out at 2:30 am but the driver seems to think he got much more sleep which is good considering he is driving,

It’s 8:30 now and we have stopped for many wee stops, fuel, Maccas, cereal and a stretch. We are a traveling through places that are in my work catchment area. It’s nice to give some perspective to these towns and where they are located in relation to services.

First fuel stop found Tara with the quote of the day. She very excitedly stated “ohh are we here?”. When I told her no, not yet, she replied “we’ll how much longer?” This mind you was only a few hours in!! Wait till the end of 6 weeks traveling!!!

The stress of going on Holidays

Who would have thought going on Holidays was so stressful??

Started badly as I left work Wednesday night, was almost home when I saw a car crash right in front of me! Lady was turning and a young P plater ran the red, totalling her car, spinning it 180 degrees! Was horrible as I could see the whole thing happening. I had no choice but to stop to make sure everyone was ok. I had to call the police and then hang around to give a statement. Anyway, no one was badly hurt, a little bruised and their cars had to be towed away, but it could have been much worse. I was late to our family farewell dinner, but at least I still had a car to drive (would have been a short holiday otherwise!).

Was Thursday morning when the stress really started, woke to Oh my God I have a lot to do! Spent a good part of the day shopping, packing and preparing.

Was a little stressed as I had not been able to get hold of the guy that was going to look after Ruby (the dog), and I was starting to think I would have to rush Ruby off to the kennel. Had tried multiple times to call him and all I got was a message that the phone was switched off or unavailable 🙁 In the end I managed to get hold of him via email… his phone had got wet and wasn’t working! Arranged with him to drop Ruby off at his house after 6pm which was in itself a hassle as that meant I couldn’t finish packing the car. Other issue was he lived on the other side of town, so I spent 1.5 hours fighting peak hour to get there.

This guy had 3 other dogs, and of course Ruby was in their territory, so was a little bit of a worry there for a while until Ruby established her spot in the pack. I’m sure they will work it out, but hopefully Ruby doesn’t lose an eye or ear in the process!

Got home from dropping Ruby at about 8pm, and spent a mad couple of hours doing the final packing so we could get to bed early enough to get a few zzz’s.

What a stress!!

Anyhow, we are away 🙂

Left at 3:17am this morning to a strong northerly head wind (didn’t help the fuel economy much!) and a light drizzle that got pretty heavy as we came over the Great Divide. Luckily the rain eased and it was a pretty uneventful trip. At the moment we are in a town called Finley for a quick bite to eat and to let everyone stretch their legs.

I’ll let Fi fill you in on the rest… but be warned someone is a little grumpy at being woken at 2am…. not looking at anyone Fi :p

Until later….

….Yay the trip has begun!

I can feel a roadtrip coming on….

SO CLOSE…

…has been more than 12 months in the planning and now… we are so close.

That’s right time to hit the road for a another massive Caravan Adventure. Where are we going this time I hear you say?

Well…

Plan is to go North, then North some more before a turn to the West. Depending on when we hit the T intersection, we may go a little further north before heading south again.

So for anyone that can’t make out that plan, we are heading up the east coast, across to the center and from 3-ways (yes that is a place) we will either head north towards Darwin, or South through the red center. A massive trip and one we are all looking forward to 🙂 6 weeks on the road with only minimal planning!

So the count down is on, won’t say just yet when we are leaving, but let’s just say we will be well into NSW by this time next week, and I look forward to once more updating the blog each morning, so you can all come along too. (PS – we love getting comments from home and knowing people are reading the blog…) For anyone that doesn’t yet know, you can put your email address in the subscribe box on the left of the home page, and you will get an email when we blog. This time not only will you be able to read my dribble, but I’m sure we will get Fiona, Mark and Kate to write a few lines as well.

I have also told the kids they will need to blog every couple of days, but we will see how that plays out!

Anyway, a few more days of work, and a lot at both work and home to sort out before we can leave, but either way we are all very excited and can feel it is getting close. Let’s see what great adventures we have this time 🙂

The trip that almost wasn’t…

It all began about 2 weeks ago during our weekly “get together”, James had just got a new 4wd so it was suggested that we have a boy’s weekend away with our boys. Looking in the calander, we penciled in this weekend (last weekend of the school holidays) as the only one available until after cup weekend and it was set… well that was the plan up until Thursday last week!!

James realized that Josh still had two more weeks of football and so he pulled out and Mark and I were nervously watching the weather which was forecasting wet wet and more wet! I was also getting over a chest infection with a crazy cough that really wasn’t suited to a cold wet weekend in the bush.

By Thursday Mark made the call, he wasn’t going based on the weather and the fact he would rather spend the weekend getting his house ready to put on the market and I must admit at the time with my cough, I didn’t take a lot of convincing. We broke the news to the boys who were a little disappointed, but fairly understanding.

By Friday evening though… I had changed my mind… I wanted to go!!

So late Friday, I approached Zac and asked if he was still keen? Given the excited response, the trip was back on!

I spent Friday night the car ready, fridge in, camping gear in, roof rack on, BBQ, table, chairs, some warm clothing and we were loaded. Just needed some food.

We woke to a reasonable day on the Saturday, and left home about 8:30am. After a quick visit to Coles for supplies we were on our way. Now by this time, the only concern I had was that it was going to rain all night and I wasn’t really looking forward to standing around in the rain. So I made the decision to invest in a Tigerz11 rollout awning for the car. Lucky for us, Tigerz11 was on the way in Lilydale, so we made a short detour and bought a 2x3m awning that bolts onto the roof rack. We loaded our new purchase into the car and headed up through the Black Spur to Marysville.

Was as we were coming through Narbathong that I got a message from Tara and Jess, so we made a quick Facetime call from the car to say farewell. Was a quick call, but no sooner were we off the phone then I was got a message from Fi saying “were was my call?”, so a second call was made to farewell Mum who was fast asleep when we left. Was during this time that it came to light that someone in the car (and it wasn’t me…) had forgotten their toothbrush, so we made a final stop at the Marysville IGA to buy what must be the most expensive toothbrush in the world!!

We followed the road out of Marysville past the turn off to Lake Mountain, before turning off the road at the Cumberland reserve where We paused to let down the tyres for a comfy drive on the dirt. Was almost an adventure to just get here, but at last we were in the bush 🙂

The first two or three tracks we headed down turned into disasters as each time we were confronted by either a dead end or a large fallen tree that was too big for my chainsaw 🙁

Finally though we managed to break through and spent the rest of the day winding up Kepple Ridge, Rough Hill and the Four Mile Spur back down to the Stockmans Reward camp ground. Most of the day was easy going with a few steep climbs and ascents, and we found some nice muddy puddles but nothing too tricky.

While stopping for a “nature” break, Zac discovered an awesome clearing with magnificent views, so we pulled up to have some lunch. Just like last time we had bought Hot Dogs for lunch, and we setup our table and the BBQ to boil them up… well that was until I realized that I had forgotten the pot… DOH! Luckily we were able to boil the kettle and pour boiling water over them in a bowl, replacing the water which quickly cooled in the Mountain air. It did work however, and with full bellies we headed off again up the track. I took a panorama on my phone, so will try to upload it here…

Panorama from lunch

Hope that looks ok!!

Anyway, probably the only challenge for the day was at the bottom of a steep descent where we came across a very muddy section of track. Again nothing too tricky, although it took 4-Lo and my foot to the floor for us to slip and slide our way through… my poor tyres were slicks by the time we made it 🙂

We arrived at Stockmans reward about 3:30pm in the afternoon and realized that it was close to the awesome campsite that Zac and I stayed at the first time we slept out. We quickly shot off down the road, and managed to once again stumble across it. This campsite was awesome, fully concealed from the road and right on the Big River, although we didn’t have to drive through two big bog holes to get in here last time 😉

Was a little muddier that I remembered it, so we went for a quick drive to check out some of the nearby sites… as they were just as bad, we felt nostalgic and so headed back to make camp. I sent Zac off to find some sticks to get the fire going while I did a bit of bushman mechanics to fit the new awning. Now I must say, this awning was the difference between a miserable night and a great night. Once I figured out how to bolt it to the roof rack, we extended it and had it ready in minutes. Instant cover 🙂 (Big Kudos for Tigerz11)

Unfortunately, Zac wasn’t so successful at gathering wood ending up with a measly pile of twigs, but luckily I had planned ahead bringing a tub of good Red Gum from home and it wasn’t long before we had a good sized fire crackling. The rain held off just long enough to cook and eat my steak and Zac’s fish, starting to drizzle just as we had finished cleaning up. Not really rain, but just enough to be annoying 🙁

We setup our swags under the awning sideways given the slight slope and only the ends weren’t covered. For the most part though we were dry so we settled around the fire for the night. Managed to get some good heat out of it and we barely noticed the rain that continued to fall.

Not so the next morning when we woke to what can be described no other way than rain. Everything was wet, and the ground was very muddy underfoot, but once we had packed the swags we were able to comfortably cook up a great breakfast under the awning, and were in no rush to get moving.

As will happen though we finally said it was time to go, so loaded all the wet equipment into and on the car. Cold and wet, we decided that was enough camping and 4wd’ing for one weekend and it was time to head home, we jumped into the car, turned the key and….. nothing!

OMG! A flat battery in the middle of the bush with no phone reception!!!

Luckily I was a good boy scout and had brought along the jump pack, so I connected it up and…. nothing!

That’s right… now we were screwed!!

I told Zac we may have to spend another night in the bush, but he wasn’t too concerned as he simply said “Yay, can’t go to school tomorrow”! I must admit I was a little more concerned. That being said, we had heard a lot of traffic up and down the main road, and I was about to tell Zac we will have to camp out by the road, flag someone down and hope they have jumper cables when the most amazing thing happened…

A white Patrol drove into our campsite… what the?? There was no reason at all for anyone to come down this little dead end track, and no one had driven in here the whole time we were here! I ran up to the car to find a Father and son, “have you got jump leads” I asked and he said “Reckon so” 🙂

So long story short, after a few tries, we managed to get the car going and were on our way. Zac later commented that it must be Karma as on the last trip we had gone out of our way to help someone else that had a flat battery. I don’t know what it was, but I was sure glad he turned into our campsite.

We followed the road straight out of the bush, pulling up just as we hit the bitumen to re-inflate the tyres. Was about then that some young kids pulled up in a 4wd. One of the guys had a flat tyre and no pump, and they begged me to follow them back to the campsite 2kms down the road to help them. My first thought was no way, as I had had enough, but then I guess one good deed deserves another, so we agreed and followed them back into the forest.

Their campsite looked like a typical young guys campsite, a massive fire with way too much wood on it, a bloke scooting through the mud on a way too small motorbike and 3 or 4 guys sitting around sinking cans… it almost felt like home before I realized that I was about 20 years too old for a campsite like that!!!

His tyre was certainly flat, sitting on the rim in fact, so we pumped it back up and were on our way. As we drove away, Zac shook his head saying “Teenagers… I will never act silly like that!” I just smiled and chuckled to myself “we’ll see son, we’ll see…”

Well that’s it, we finally made it out of the forest and home again. Another exciting adventure done.

PS – Made a quick call to Custom Fleet this evening and they sent the RACV out to fit a new battery in the car… let’s hope there are no more flat batteries for me!!!
