We got a slab…

Finally, after months of waiting, wet ground, bog holes and lots of weekends building a gravel road, the slab for the shed got poured 🙂

So, this weekend we took a quick trip up the Hume to check it out. Left late on Friday night after the girls returned from a Movie night at the school and arrived under the cover of darkness at Little Duna. Our wood supply had diminished somewhat during our week up here last holidays, but it was a warmish night and we still had enough for a small fire before calling it a night.

Now for some crazy reason, Fi had decided to get Kushi groomed during the week and first thing in the morning he undid all the good work by rolling in the dirt and leaves… wasn’t long before his coat was covered in grass, sticks and leaves…

Lucky he is cute!!

IMG_2010.JPG

This was our first hot weekend up here in a while, with the mercury soaring to 34 degrees on Saturday. Sit in the sun for a few minutes and that winter white skin was turning pink (as I discovered…) and even in the shade it was very warm. We spent the day chasing the shadows in an attempt to keep cool… all except Ruby that is who was more than happy to take many swims in the dam. She has even taken to dipping her head under water to stay cool, although still cautious of not getting in too deep.

IMG_2013.JPG

Now I know you were keen to see the block green Dad, but unfortunately I think you have missed your chance this year as the grass is already starting to turn brown. While there is still a green tinge in places, it is nowhere near what it was a few weeks ago when Little Duna was a meadow of lush green grass. The good news is this means it won’t grow any higher this year… I still haven’t worked out how I am going to mow it yet and it is already a good 20-30cm high in spots. Will have to sort that out before long or it will become a bushfire hazard!

IMG_2020.JPG

IMG_2027.JPG I had a number of small jobs I wanted to achieve on this trip, and my first job of the day Saturday morning was to fix the loose chain on the quad bike. Armed with the knowledge I had gained from watching YouTube videos during the week, I sat down first thing in the heat of the morning and tightened the chain.

Excited to be back on the quad bike again, I jumped on and went for a spin…

IMG_2029.JPG

Unfortunately I didn’t get far as when I stopped at the first dam to give Ruby a swim, I noticed the suspension seemed a little spongy. As I took off I heard the rear mudguard touching the tyre and on inspection discovered that I had once again snapped the suspension 🙁 Same place it broke last time! At least I was able to lift it and rest it on the frame. As long as I didn’t go too fast or over too many bumps I was able to slowly drive up and back from the front dam to give Ruby plenty of swims to cool off.

IMG_2017.JPG

My next job of the day was to take a look at the generator, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to get it going… got me stumped, it won’t even turn over or try to start. It is like the battery is completely dead, even though I charged it off the car to 13.5 volts. Guess I will have to make a trip up with the trailer to bring it back for repair. Was a real pain as we could have had the air conditioner running in the van all weekend 🙁

Instead, the kids complained all day long. “It’s too hot…” became a mantra for them and we couldn’t persuade them to take a walk and give their parents a rest!!

Instead, we took a drive into town and had lunch at the cafe. Was as we returned to the block in the afternoon that I decided to give Zac a little surprise…

He jumped out to open and close the gate, and I pulled up near a tree to grab a log of wood I had left behind when I had been cutting a branch with the chainsaw months before. I threw it up on the roof rack and as Zac ran up to the car I grabbed him and pushed him into the drivers seat…

“Time to lear how to drive…” I said to a bewildered Zac. “Mum will  teach you…” as I shut the door and began walking back to camp. hehe

Fi talked him through the basics of driving and we let him drive the car slowly up the driveway back to camp while the girls freaked out in the back that Zac was driving!

Zac was pretty chuffed with himself, but what was an attempt to  teach him the wonders of the world beyond the computer (how many other kids his age get the chance to drive 500m up a driveway), it kind of backfired as he spent the next 30 minutes asking if he could have another go!!!

Never one to waste an opportunity, I offered Zac a deal… “If you can double the wood pile, I will let you drive up and down the driveway twice!!”

Never seen Zac so keen to help gather wood, and it wasn’t long before we were well stocked for the nights fire, and probably the next two as well 🙂

Zac now thinks that every time we head in or out of the property he is going to drive, but I got news for him!!

For dinner that evening we headed into the pub and were greeted like locals (they remembered us from last time) and we sat in the new beer garden to eat our tea.

The beer garden had only opened on Thursday after being renovated and was a pleasant change from sitting in the hot pub on such a nice night. Note for next time though… Bushman up before coming in as right on dusk the mozzies came to pay us a visit. Shame as it would have been nice to sit out there and have a few drinks now that Zac can drive us back….

Just kidding…. no really it was a joke!!

No way I’m going to let Zac drive after a few beers!!!

(that was a joke too in case you couldn’t detect the sarcasm!)

Anyway, suppose I had better show you why we came up… we got a slab!

IMG_2034.JPG

Yea alright, it is just a slab of concrete, but I was pretty excited!!

IMG_2036.JPG

This means that within a few weeks, the builders will be onsite and it won’t be long until we have a shed 😀

So with a bit of luck, the next time we head up there we will have somewhere else to hang out, and I can finally move the quad bike in under cover.

In the mean time, I’ll leave you with a picture of the greenest area I could find that hasn’t yet died out under the hot sun… Our oasis, the second dam.

IMG_2031.JPG

Just checked out a few of the photos taken from the same spot over the last few months… amazing the way the land changes every time we come up.

Cheers

The Haunted House

Tara and Jess, inspired by the success of their first thriller decided to make a second movie…

This one is even scarier than the first!!!! Don’t watch it just before bed time!!!

I suggested maybe something a little more light hearted for the next movie!!! LOL

They are having fun so I will keep posting their efforts up here.

Glenrowan – a step back in time with the Kelly Gang

You know where we are in Violet Town is Kelly country. There is a chance that Australia’s most famous bushranger once wandered across where our block is now… who knows??

So, given the impeding rain, we thought we might take a drive up to Glenrowan, only about 30 minutes further up the Hume so the kids can learn who Ned Kelly really was.

As we left the Hume we got our first surprise as Fi spotted an echidna crossing the road in front. Lucky I was able to stop in time or I may have had a flat from the spikes! Given where we were, the kids couldn’t safely come out of the car, so Fi and I jumped out and took a few quick pictures of the little guy.

IMG_1883.JPG

IMG_1884.JPG

As we continued into the town, we saw a giant statue of Ned Kelly, so of course we had to stop and take a picture.

IMG_1885.JPG

As the girls were posing for their photos, I noticed that across the road was a Kelly Museum and gift shop, so we parked the car and wandered in. The museum was full of relics from the Kelly era, including a few replicas such as the armour suits below. As you made your way around the museum, you could read about Ned and his story as to why he became a bushranger.IMG_1886.JPG

IMG_1887.JPG

Was fascinating and I certainly learnt a lot about him I didn’t know. Out the back of the museum was a replica of his log cabin. Kids being kids, it didn’t take long until they were in the lockup. I warned them what would happen if they didn’t behave…

IMG_1888.JPG

IMG_1889.JPG

IMG_1890.JPG

Luckily they all made bail and we continued our tour through the town.

A few doors down was what I was looking for, the Ned Kelly Show. The story of Ned’s last stand told by moving marionettes in a light, sound and picture show. I remember coming here when I was about the girls age and being scared out of my wits, so of course I couldn’t wait to get the kids inside…hehe.

The show is still the same as I remember it way back in the early 80’s, sure it has had a lick of paint and a few enhancements over time, but mostly it was the same. The guy who runs the show said he had lived there for over 40 years doing this show… I don’t know how he was still able to look so into his job given it runs every 30 minutes!!

Anyway, the brave kids all piled into the first room where a magician took us back in time to just before the Kelly Gangs last stand. I think the girls lasted about 30 seconds before Jess climbed into my lap and Tara was holding on for dear life!!! Hehe… was still a scary show even after all these years!

Zac however was just doing his best to look bored. This stuff doesn’t scare teenager who kept saying “This is nothing, I play games scarier than this!”

Well, I just bided my time.

IMG_1892.JPG

Was just after the shoot out that we were ushered into the inn, which of course the police set on fire. I motioned to Zac, “Hey Zac, look over here…” I said pointing to the fireplace. “What?” he said with a bored expression, moving closer just in case it was worth seeing…

I could not have timed it better….. BANG! the roof caved in above him and he nearly jumped out of his skin!!!! Hahahahahaha…. not so brave now are you!!!! I am so mean…hehe..

Anyway, we made it through the show, traveling back in time to present day as Tara held me so tight with tears streaming down her face… she was very relieved when we were finally let back out and the show was over. Even though they were scared through the show, they all had a great time and loved it….once it was over!!

We wandered across the road to a cafe for afternoon tea, then made the dash back home as we watched the rain getting closer and closer on the radar. Wasn’t long after we arrived back at Little Duna that it started raining and while not heavy, it wasn’t long before everything was soaked.

Fi and I looked at each other and shrugged. What could we do? So we packed the kids back in the car and went to the pub for dinner.

Had a great meal, the staff at the pub remembered the kids and they were lovely. The owner even gave Fi some cuttings from the garden to plant at our place… I mentioned we only had a paddock up here and she shrugged “These will grow in a paddock!!”

Zac was also bribed by the owner into finishing his chips with a free glass of coke if he could eat them.

We took our time eating and talking having a wonderful meal as the rain continued to fall outside. Was about 9pm by the time we got back to Little Duna where we sent the kids to bed as Fi and I sat in the guest house watching movies. This was the first night up here that we didn’t even light a fire!!

Anyway, while it rained all night, we woke this morning to beautiful sunshine. Already the ground is starting to dry and I think we will be ok for our last few days up here. Now, I can smell breakfast cooking on the bbq… bacon and eggs… gotta go!

Cheers,

School Holidays

Ok, so I suppose it is time to update you on our School Holidays trip to Little Duna. This week of course being the first week of the school holidays, Fiona and I thought it would be a great chance to torture the kids… err… I mean get the kids off the computer and spend a week camping on the land.

We delayed our departure on the weekend to help Kate move to Cheltenham. “probably just need you to do a trailer load” she said… hehe… luckily I knew better!! Took us most of the day to load the truck, van and trailer and shift it. Had some interesting challenges with getting some of the furniture upstairs… let’s just say it is lucky I had my ropes in the car!!!

IMG_1873.JPG

Anyway, ended up being a full day of moving, so it was about 6:30pm when we finally got home. Much to Zac’s disappointment though, Fi and I were still keen to head up that night so we could wake Sunday in Violet Town and make the most of the day. Fi was going to have to come back Monday  to work, so would have been a pain if we hadn’t even gotten up here until lunchtime on Sunday.

So, we ate a quick dinner and finished packing the car and caravan. We did pretty good time really, although it was about 9:30pm by the time we were ready to leave. I pulled the van out the front to fill the tanks, which ended up with our neighbours coming out to see what we were doing, luckily David across the road came out as he was able to help me as we attempted to leave….

Those of you who have been you our house would know that the street is not very wide and we often have trouble with cars parking on both sides of the street. Not an issue if people put a wheel on the grass, but sometimes we get morons who just park on the road. You can just squeeze a car through, but there is no chance of getting the van through! Was about half way up the road I came to a complete stop. There was no way I was getting past without taking the side off a black Mazda 3. What could I do… well given it was only 10pm, I sat on the horn waking most of the neighbours. I was loosing my patience by this time…

Eventually, Fi and I resulted to door knocking, and eventually Fi managed to find the owner. He could see by the look on my face I wasn’t in the mood to have a chat, so he sheepishly climbed into the passenger side of his car and moved it well out of the street… right, one down…

This is where I was happy David was there as while the cars at the top of the street weren’t as bad, there was maybe a centimetre spare on each side. After shoving all their car mirrors in (hey I could have just knocked the off!), David guided me through and we were on our way… at 10:30pm!!!!

Anyway, was well past midnight by the time we arrived, the kids had all flaked in the car, so Fi and I quickly made camp and put them right to bed. We are here 🙂

Woke Sunday to a glorious sunny day, but my mood was soon dampened when I went to start the generator and it wouldn’t start. Had a flat starting battery 🙁 To make things worse, I realised I had left the outside light on the caravan on all night, effectively draining a battery we now couldn’t charge!!!

Lucky I had my jump leads in the car and I was able to recharge the battery enough from the car. I left that going while Fi made us an awesome breakfast of pancakes and french toast… yummy 🙂

After breakfast, I returned to the generator and this time it turned over but… would die as soon as it started??? Was like it was being starved for fuel. Grabbing my tool kit, I started some bush mechanics, draining the diesel from the tank and cleaning out the fuel filter. Managed to coat my hands in diesel in the process which is just what you want when you haven’t got much water and little way to clean them!!

I got it all back together, but it was doing the same thing, kicking over and starting but then stopping 🙁 was about then I gave up.

So the rest of the day was spent relaxing, although I must say up here I never seem to get much time during the day to just sit. There is always something to do, even if it is just going for a walk with the dogs. I found the totem tennis that Mark had donated to the block in the caravan, so set it up for the kids. Would you believe that Zac has found a new passion. He spent hours hitting that ball back and forth until he had a blister on his hand… then he did it some more!!

IMG_1875.JPG

Biggest problem was we only had one totem tennis and three kids… you can imagine the arguments that developed. So, I implemented a new rule for the holiday. If you can’t play, speak or be nice, then you must walk down to the front gate and back. Worked a treat and the kids have made many a trip to the front gate and back. Seems to cool their heads a little, although Tara has learnt that if you still come back grumpy, you can be turned around and sent straight back!!!! The threat at night is the best, as they know I will send them in the dark if they don’t stop… hehe I can be so mean!!

So Sunday afternoon, Fi and the kids took off on a walk to town leaving me with instructions to  “Fix that bloody generator”, then come pick them up in town an hour later. After a bit of mucking around, I realised that the generator seemed to be making the same sound as when the fuel lines needed bleeding, so I quickly bled the line (only getting fuel all over one hand this time), kicked it over and….. SUCCESS!!

Since then we have had the generator running almost day and night, humming away in the background providing more than enough power for the caravans, kettle, toaster, iPads, iPods, iPhones and of course my Mac 🙂

Proud of my achievement, I jumped in the car (after cleaning the fuel off my hand) and headed into town where I found Fi and the kids sitting outside the Cafe… they had only just arrived. We had some chips and Zac and I had a few pieces of their awesome fried chicken before Zac, Jess and I jumped back in the car while Tara and Fi opted to walk back. Fi was most impressed when she realised the generator was humming away 🙂

So that was Sunday, Monday, well Fi left us.

No not like that, she headed back to Melbourne to work! The kids and I took a trip into Shepparton so I could get some more gas canisters from Kmart for the BBQ. We were almost there when I realised that being a weekday, the SPC factory outlet would be open. Now I must say this place goes off!!! The kids and I stocked up on goodies, although I’m sure if Fi was there she would have wanted more… there are heaps of bargains! For example we got trays of 12 x two fruit cups for $5 per tray!! Fantastic!!

After SPC, we headed over to Kmart to get the gas, and bought another totem tennis to try to ease the fights… seems I should have bought two! We also got some lunch from KFC… guess who picked that one…Zac!

After that we returned to the block where we managed to fill in the afternoon playing totem tennis while I pottered around.

IMG_1879.JPG

Really need to get another totem! At least they are only $12!

That evening as we lit the fire, I cooked up a BBQ feast before the kids all retired to the guest house to watch movies while I watched a few flicks on my Mac around the fire. While the days were nice and warm, the nights are still getting down pretty cold, so I am burning through our wood pile…literally!

Tuesday we woke to another amazingly sunny and warm day. The girls and I were up early as I had ordered another truck load of gravel for the road. This time I opted for a 60mm rock, and to be honest I should have got that to start with! Tara, Jess and I with Ruby and Kushi on leads headed down to open the front gate while Zac opted to sleep… he really must be a teenager now!

We made it to the gate just in time as Wal was coming up the road in the truck. I showed him where I wanted it on the boggy bits and he dumped it as Tara filmed it off to the side.

This time he also managed to get the gravel almost all the way to the shed site 🙂 The larger rock is the key though, filling in the ruts that Giovanni had remade when he came up here after all the rain. Once he was done, Tara, Jess and I jumped in my car and we went up and down the driveway to try to compact the gravel. Poor Ruby followed the car back and forth, back and forth until I had to drive over to the dam so she could have a drink and a swim to cool off. I think she was about to collapse! Kushi followed us down on the first trip, then just stood in the driveway waiting to be run over… dumb dog! The girls jumped out and put him in the car so we didn’t have to worry about him.

Driveway done, we headed back to camp (where ruby did crash) to make a breakfast of pancakes for the kids and an omelet for me. After breakfast, I dragged the kids who had barely moved 50m from the camp out for a walk around the block… even the grumpy teenager was forced to come along. We wandered around together, although as I kept going at the second dam, the kids finally realised they can have fun and I left them running across the tree bridge laughing and being chased by the dogs.

Once we returned to camp, we changed into shorts saw it was starting to feel quite hot, then jumped in the car to head into town for Milk. Took a different track this time driving down some of the “dry weather only” roads exploring some of the neighbours farms.

Now as some of you are no doubt aware, the weather has been sensational the last few days, but Wednesday that was all going to end as we are expecting rain and possible thunderstorms. We had erected the pergola on Sunday, but had no walls on the side. This meant if it did rain everything under it was going to get wet. So, I rigged up some tarps as walls around two sides in preparation for the rain. Had to do a quick trip into Benalla in  the afternoon as I realised I only had one tarp and we really needed to cover two walls to have any chance of keeping the wind and rain out.

It is crude but should hopefully do the trick… I’ll take a quick picture…

IMG_1881.JPG

Fi arrived back up here about 9:30pm. The kids were all watching a movie in the guest house, so they didn’t even realise she was here. I got her to sit in a chair under the pergola in the dark while I opened the door of the caravan and said to the kids, “Mum’s at the front gate and can’t get in… come on we have to walk down and let her in…”.

They all quickly and excitedly got their shoes on as Fi sat there quietly and watched, then Jess said “we need a torch!”.

“Here, take mine” I said, and as she turned the torch on she turned around to see Fi sitting there… “Mummy!” she screamed in surprise.

Well that’s it, sorry it was such a long read, but I did have to fit a few days in there. Today, well I’m sitting in the guest house writing this as the wind howls outside. So far we haven’t seen to much rain, although I can see from the ground that we got a sprinkling last night. Just enough to keep the dust down… oh and just realised I can see some drops on the sunroof… must be starting to rain now 🙁

Let’s hope the thunderstorms by-pass us and we don’t get too much rain. While I’m not to worried about hanging out in the rain (much to Zac’s disappointment when he realised we are not going home just because it is raining) I am worried that it will be even longer before we can get our slab poured for the shed!

The rain is certainly around…

IMG_1882.PNG

Will see how we go, may take a trip into Glenrowan today and I think it is time Fi tasted the fine cuisine at the Violet Town Pub for dinner 🙂

Will try to update you again, but otherwise will do a followup post once we are back this weekend.

Cheers 🙂

Little Duna Lane

Well yesterday I finished the driveway. Woke early again to another spectacular pre-dawn view, although my phone had died over night so I wasn’t able to take a picture this time.

Was a cold start, so I fired up the generator and tested the heater in the van. Worked a treat, but I soon discovered that I was out of Gas 🙁 With the generator running I was able to pull out the electric kettle and boil some water for a cuppa. Also at the same time I put some toast on for breakfast, and the generator didn’t even miss a beat. With so many appliances pulling such a big load I was worried that it would struggle, but it just hummed away in the background!!

Anyway, after breakfast I jumped in the bobcat and spent a good few hours going up and down the new driveway with load after load of gravel to finish off the path from the shed to the camp. Was slow going and took hours before the pile was small enough and I spread the remaining gravel alongside the driveway to flatten it our after the bobcat had chewed up the area.

Once done, I set about cleaning up, and quickly took the remaining logs from the cattle ramp up the back of the block to build a little bridge across the creek. Was a rushed job given I had to be on the road by 2pm (had to get back in time for Kristy’s 40th), and I only just finished it in time. In the rush I forgot to take a photo, so will have to remember that for next trip.

Jobs done, I raced back to camp and did very quick pack up, loaded the Bobcat onto the trailer and took a last drive along the new and improved Little Duna Lane.

I also took a short video to show the road from Little Duna to the Freeway.

Day 2 of driveway building

Why is it when you have the opportunity to sleep in it just doesn’t happen??? I woke at 6am (even though I didn’t set an alarm today) to singing birds and the sounds of the country. While it was certainly cold, I didn’t get the fog that was blanketing Melbourne. In fact I was greeted with a spectacular pre-sunrise view.

IMG_1837.JPG

I ate breakfast as the sun came up, then headed over to the driveway to spread the carpet before the gravel arrived. Didn’t take long at all to complete that job, now I just needed some gravel.IMG_1838.JPG

With nothing else to do and some time to kill, I took the bobcat out onto the road to do some work on the drain along the front… that was my biggest mistake… seconds later I was bogged!! Crap… how do you get a bobcat out of deep muddy clay??

I walked back to camp and brought the car around hoping I could winch it out. Took a bit of mucking around, but eventually I was able to pull it free. I’ll stay well away from the mud in future.

So, I spent my morning doing odd jobs with the bobcat. I filled in holes and dug some more loose soil so I have a good pile to access when I need it. Finally, sick of waiting I decided to build a log bridge across the creek using the logs I had removed from the cattle ramp. I grabbed my fist log and motored up the back of the block in the bobcat. I had just dumped my first log when I turned around and saw a truck and trailer heading past the block up the road… damn I thought… that will be my gravel.

Sure enough I got a call a short time later from the driver asking where I was!

Anyway, Wal arrived with the gravel. I asked him to drop the first load just inside the gate.

The second half of the load I asked him to drop at the other end of the driveway. He was about to dump it when he asked “Do you just want me to drive it on for you?”

Now that was easier!!!

He dropped the second half of the load and spread it along the driveway. I quickly realised that I was going to need another load of the same, so he said he would be back in a few hours.

Needing some more cash to pay him, I jumped in the car and raced down to the Euroa Coles Express to use the ATM. Was then that I realised I was a little hungry and so I treated myself to a Kebab from the roadhouse… must have been hungrier than I thought because I devoured it before I was half way back to Violet Town!!

I jumped back in the Bobcat and started to spread the gravel pile along the entrance to the block. All I can say is thank god Wal was able to spread the gravel as he dumped it because it was very slow going with the bobcat. I had only finished to just inside the gate when he arrived with the second load.

IMG_1840.JPGNow driving the gravel on like this must be cheating, but who cares… it is so much easier!!

I spent the rest of the afternoon filling in the gaps. I ended up pulling up most of the carpet as the truck had moved it under the gravel 🙁 oh well, was a good idea in theory!

Once the drive was done, I started spreading the remainder of the gravel along my path to from camp to the shed… that was slow going as my pile of gravel was just inside the front gate!

I worked pretty much until I lost the light and tomorrow will only have to finish spreading the gravel along the path.

So that’s it, we have a driveway 🙂

I’ll take a video on the way out tomorrow so your can see the finished product.

This Road has gotta be built!

I feel like I am on the home stretch… one way or another in the next few days this road has got to be built!!!

So I took two days of annual leave this week to finish the driveway. Was lucky to get the time off given how busy we are at work, but somehow I managed to swing it, and so I find myself once again at Little Duna.

Picked up a Bobcat from Ferntree Gully at about 7:30 this morning  and after a quick stop at home to farewell the family, I joined the queues of cars on the freeway and headed back to Violet Town. The run up wasn’t too bad once I got past the peak hour traffic around Heidelburg and Greensborough I had a pretty good run up the Hume arriving around 11am.

Without wasting a moment, I unloaded the Bobcat and got to work. Took a quick Video on the way in so you can see the progress…

The Bobcat was so much faster than  the excavator I had used a couple of weeks ago and it wasn’t long before I had done a similar job to what took hours last time. Only took me about 10 mins of mucking around before I figured out how to drive it and I was an expert! I grabbed the dirt from the cattle ramp by the first dam and filled the holes on the driveway. Back and forth, back and forth I went, load after load of dirt to fill in the holes.

I was lucky enough to get a free smudge bar thrown in with the hire, a frame that you can grab with the bucket and use to level the ground. Made the job so much easier and I was able to level out some of the bumps in the road… but not all sorry 🙁

Spent about 6 or 7 hours cruising up and down the driveway filling in the holes and levelling the ground in preparation for the gravel which will arrive around 11am tomorrow. Then the real fun begins… 33 tonne of gravel to spread!! Going to be a few long hours in the bobcat tomorrow.

Anyway, took a couple of videos to show the progress I made today.

I even made a few new paths from the shed to the caravans. If I have enough left over gravel I will cover them as well… if not at least we don’t have to worry about the sticks anymore.

Dinner tonight was once again at the Violet Town pub where I had an awesome perfectly cooked steak. I thought it was pretty good, although I was told to try the rib eye next time as it is even better… maybe tomorrow.

Anyway, big day today and an even bigger one tomorrow as the road finally starts to take shape. If I get a chance will send another update through tomorrow.

A quick trip to Violet Town

OK ok, I know you’re waiting for the latest update on Violet town (Mum & Dad), so here it is..

Was a quick trip this time round, Fiona was off on a Girls weekend with her school friends, re-living and reminiscing their youth 20 years on, so Zac, Tara, Jess and I decided to head back up to Little Duna for a night. We left Saturday morning after dropping Fi at Bridget’s house and headed North, arriving just after lunch.

The good news was my work on the driveway the week before had paid off and while still a bit bumpy, the road was in good condition for driving with little sign of the boggy mess that was there before. Will only take a quick run over with the bobcat to finish levelling it ready for laying the gravel.

We setup our camp, and it wasn’t long before we were joined by Mark, Kris and her friend Mel. Mark had offered to bring up the trailer of carpet for me so I could tow my van, and they all crashed in the guest house for a night.

The afternoon was spent riding the quad bike and relaxing in the sun which was absolutely beautiful, although as the sun disappeared behind the trees, the temperature quickly dropped and we had to get a good fire going to chase away the chills.

Dinner that night was a quick trip to the bistro at the Violet Town pub which serves a great meal, then it was back to Little Duna to burn some wood and enjoy some beverages 😉

In the morning, Mark and the girls had to be back on the road by 9am (before the kids even woke!) as they had to be back in Melbourne for Clare’s birthday party that afternoon.

We took a slower approach to packing, not leaving until about 12:30pm.

Not able to do much with the carpet I simply dumped it beside the road in the places it is most needed. That will be my first job when I return Thursday with a bobcat and get the gravel delivered, I’ll lay the carpet and then load the gravel on top in an attempt to stop it disappearing into the ground.

I left our caravan up there so I can have at least a little luxury when I return, so the kids and I packed everything we needed (along with the dogs of course) into the car and headed home.

As I said, was a quick trip and only as few days until I get back there. This time I’ll try to take a few more pictures!!!

Oh and I rang the builder yesterday and told them what I had done, Wendy from Ranbuild rang back that afternoon and advised that Giovanni will be back out there Wednesday next week to finish laying the slab!!! YAY!!!!

Finally the shed build is underway again… who knows, may even be ready for school holidays late September.
