This Road has gotta be built!

Posted by on August 28, 2014

I feel like I am on the home stretch… one way or another in the next few days this road has got to be built!!!

So I took two days of annual leave this week to finish the driveway. Was lucky to get the time off given how busy we are at work, but somehow I managed to swing it, and so I find myself once again at Little Duna.

Picked up a Bobcat from Ferntree Gully at about 7:30 this morning  and after a quick stop at home to farewell the family, I joined the queues of cars on the freeway and headed back to Violet Town. The run up wasn’t too bad once I got past the peak hour traffic around Heidelburg and Greensborough I had a pretty good run up the Hume arriving around 11am.

Without wasting a moment, I unloaded the Bobcat and got to work. Took a quick Video on the way in so you can see the progress…

The Bobcat was so much faster than  the excavator I had used a couple of weeks ago and it wasn’t long before I had done a similar job to what took hours last time. Only took me about 10 mins of mucking around before I figured out how to drive it and I was an expert! I grabbed the dirt from the cattle ramp by the first dam and filled the holes on the driveway. Back and forth, back and forth I went, load after load of dirt to fill in the holes.

I was lucky enough to get a free smudge bar thrown in with the hire, a frame that you can grab with the bucket and use to level the ground. Made the job so much easier and I was able to level out some of the bumps in the road… but not all sorry 🙁

Spent about 6 or 7 hours cruising up and down the driveway filling in the holes and levelling the ground in preparation for the gravel which will arrive around 11am tomorrow. Then the real fun begins… 33 tonne of gravel to spread!! Going to be a few long hours in the bobcat tomorrow.

Anyway, took a couple of videos to show the progress I made today.

I even made a few new paths from the shed to the caravans. If I have enough left over gravel I will cover them as well… if not at least we don’t have to worry about the sticks anymore.

Dinner tonight was once again at the Violet Town pub where I had an awesome perfectly cooked steak. I thought it was pretty good, although I was told to try the rib eye next time as it is even better… maybe tomorrow.

Anyway, big day today and an even bigger one tomorrow as the road finally starts to take shape. If I get a chance will send another update through tomorrow.
